Pine Needle Baskets - Women's Cooperative of El Cerro
High upon a beautiful pine covered ridge live the women of the Women's Cooperative of El Cerro, Nicaragua. The group was formed several years ago with the help of a Dutch organization and today continues to flourish.
They harvest pine needles and then begin the long process of weaving baskets by hand. Thousands of pine needles are hand-woven into one basket. Although it can take up to one week to create, all the Artisans are paid according to Fair Trade federation standards.Â
Purchasing these beautiful pieces helps continue this art form and provides an excellent incentive to good forest management.
