The Gusii people of western Kenya have turned soapstone carving into an internationally recognized art form. Soapstone, similar to a soft limestone, is found in massive deposits around Kisii Town, and the mining and carving of décor accessories and sculpture from the stone provides income for many Gusii people. The Nairobi finishing workshop etches and hand dyes each piece with non-toxic dyes in their unique designs.
